Neglected by the administration, garbage is piling up in the Mathare slum on the outskirts of Nairobi.

For the young people of the Mathare Ecological Association, the implementation of a system of home garbage collection has a triple benefit. First, it guarantees young people a paid job while helping to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood. Finally, it has an impact on the reputation of the slum: it conveys a less violent face of the neighborhood where young people no longer turn to gangs to escape idleness but build a more sustainable future.

Every day, the young people of the association climb the high towers that line the neighborhood to take down the garbage that they transport on a cart pulled by their arms to the public dump. An intense activity welcomed by the inhabitants who appreciate to take advantage of a cleaner environment for a small fixed amount.
